Hambantota Ready To Welcome South Asia

hambantota-logo Hambantota is ready to welcome more than 400 sportsmen and women from eight South Asian countries when the inaugural South Asian Beach Games is held from October 8 to 14.

Participants from India, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan are expected to join the hosts Sri Lanka in this seven day event. The highest participation is expected from India, while Sri Lanka is also expected to have a large number of entries.

The beach sports will include volleyball, football, handball, swimming, netball, cricket, sailing, lifesaving, kabadi, basketball, and bodybuilding.

Volleyball for men and women will be played at the beaches of Hambantota, Tangalle and Tissamaharama. Eight sports grounds for the events like badminton, Kabadi, Netball have been constructed for this festival.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony while the Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

Sri Lanka hosting the games will bring a tourist boom to the city which is also the bidding city for Commonwealth Games in 2018. The games expect to draw thousands of foreign visitors and foreign exchange into the country.

Sports can play a key role in the economic development of Sri Lanka, especially with hosting international games. The authorities believe that sports could also contribute immensely towards the country’s development drives.
