Protesters allege intimidation in the north

20120117171820police5203 Activists who travelled from the South to Jaffna to protest against disappearances say they were stopped by state security forcers.

Udul Premaratna who spoke on behalf of the Movement against Disappearances and Abductions said that they were blocked at several places north of Omanthai, Vavuniya.

"We were checked meaninglessly and even falsely accused. They said that they have received information that we were carrying bombs. It took five hours for our vehicles to pass ten kilometres from the Vavuniya town "said Udul Premaratna.

The protesters who were not able to enter Jaffna had to return after holding a demonstration in Puliyankulam.

"Nearly 50 soldiers carrying poles intimidated us in Puliyankulam," charged Mr. Premaratne.
