PM Manmohan Singh should take stand on Sri Lanka war crimes: Opposition

(The Economic Times) Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured support to the US resolution against Sri Lanka, some opposition parties Tuesday asked him to take a stand on the "war crimes" committed against Tamils in the island nation.

The prime minister, in his reply to the debate on the president’s address to parliament, reiterated that India will support the US resolution at the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva.

"We do not yet have the final text of resolution but I would like to say that we are inclined to vote in favour of resolution," Manmohan Singh said Tuesday.

AIADMK members, however demanded that the prime minister commit himself to take up the issue of "war crimes" by Sri Lankan military against Tamil civilians when the Tamil Tigers were crushed in 2009.

AIADMK leader V. Maitreyan waved a CD that he said contained details of the "war crimes" and urged the prime minister to view it.

Four amendments were moved by AIADMK and the Communist Party of India (CPI).

The AIADMK insisted on voting even as it was in a minority on the issue as the DMK was supporting government.
