DMK plans rallies to celebrate Lanka resolution

With India voting in favour of a US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) in Geneva at the instance of Tamil parties, the stage is now set for all the Tamil political outfits to claim credit for forcing the hands of the UPA government. In an apparent bid to garner all the commendation, DMK is seriously toying with the idea of conducting a rally to celebrate the passage of the resolution.

According to sources, DMK supremo Dr Karunanidhi is in the process of finalising the date and place for the rally. The octogenarian is also likely to invite a few Central leaders for the event, sources said.

India, which had earlier declared that it would not vote in favour of country-specific resolutions but only on issue-based ones, was forced to shift gear due to the relentless pressure exerted by parties from Tamil Nadu.

DMK went to the extent of even announcing the date for a meeting of the executive committee to decide its future course in the event of the UPA government voting against the resolution.

Mr Karunanidhi had also announced that he would fast for the Sri Lankan Tamils cause. But the declaration of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the floor of Parliament that India would support the US move led the DMK to call off the proposed fast and the high-level committee meet.
