Sri Lanka delays budget ahead of elections

The six-year term of parliament expires in April with elections to be held soon after Sri Lanka announced Wednesday it would delay its annual budget due in November and instead seek parliamentary approval to maintain spending levels until after polls in 2010.

"Because of parliamentary elections due after April 2010, the cabinet decided not to present the budget as scheduled," media minister Anura Yapa said.

The six-year term of parliament expires in April with elections to be held soon after.

Official sources said the government planned to unveil new revenue and expenditure proposals after the polls.

Record defence spending is expected to be maintained despite the military’s victory over Tamil Tiger rebels after nearly four decades of fighting.
