TN MPs to meet Manmohan, press for truce in Sri Lanka

Chennai (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday asserted that the MPs from the state will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday to press for a ceasefire in the battle-ravaged northern parts of Sri Lanka.

Speaking to reporters here, Karunanidhi said that all MPs would unanimously urge Manmohan Singh to ensure a truce in Sri Lanka as decided in last week’s all-party meeting held in the state.

He termed the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils as that of a community and called for a united stand from all political parties to fight for their cause.

He said he would be meeting the Prime Minister on December 4 as scheduled.

On the security situation in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, Karunanidhi said the state was taking all steps to ensure proper security and added that he was having regular security review meetings with civil and police officials. "We are alert in this regard," he said.
