AG to institute legal action against Fonseka

The Attorney General has been directed by the government to investigate and institute legal action against General (retd) Sarath Fonseka for making allegation against the Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse that the latter had ordered the Division Commander on the ground to kill LTTE cadres who made an attempt to surrender, according to Human Rights Minister, Mahinda Samarasinghe.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe Sunday hurriedly convened a press briefing on the direction of the President following the allegation by General Sarath Fonseka in an interview with Sunday Leader, an English weekly published from Colombo.

Fonseka’s allegation that the Defence Secretary had violated the army rules and regulations was baseless. General Fonseka has betrayed not only the Defence Secretary and a Division Commander, but also the police and all three armed forces, minister further said.

Minister Samarasinghe reminded the speech made by General Fonseka at a felicitation to him at Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda that he had first declared that the Army had on his orders gunned down LTTE cadres who made an attempt to surrender.
