UPFA candidate threatens TNA supporters in Ampaa’rai

Pushparasa, a candidate in the East elections under the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ticket and a former member of the East Municipal Council attacked Tamil National Alliance (TNA) supporters and threatened with death TNA member of the Naavithan Ve’li Piratheasiya Sapai member Gunaratnam at 2.00 p.m. near the polling booth at the Ma’nal Kunru Junction Kannaki Vidyaalyam, sources in Ampaa’rai said.

Youths belonging to TNA were assembled 500 meters from the polling booth when Pushparasa, arriving with his body guards, had attacked the youth puncturing the bicycle tires and snatching motorbike keys from the TNA youths, eye-witnesses said.

When Gunaratnam arrived at the location on this way home, UPFA’s Pushparasa had threatened to grab his own bodyguard’s gun and to shoot Gunaratnam dead, witnesses further said.

When the TNA youth went to the Ampaa’rai police station to record a complaint, the police have allegedly refused to register the complaint, and instead have advised the complaining party to make peace with the UPFA candidate.

Local civil activists said, despite a history of complaints against Pushparasa of attacking and threatening TNA supporters from the time the Eastern Provincial Elections were announced, the Police have refused to take actions against Pushparasa.
