The intelligence and political operatives who operate under the direct command of SL presidential siblings Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the SL defence secretary and Basil Rajapaksa, the economic minister have been trying to woo grassroots Tamil members of the civic bodies in the North and East to the side of the ruling UPFA in the South. US-trained SL military commander in Jaffna, Major General Udaya Perera, who has been transferred to Colombo and promoted to the rank of Director General General Staff at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff is attempting to woo TNA urban Council chairpersons and deputy chairpersons in North to the side of the UPFA through Colombo-based Tamil operatives, informed sources in Jaffna said.

A civic member of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) from Thirukkoayil, K. Puviraj, on Monday confirmed that he was invited by Mr Alwis of Puraneguma development scheme with an offer to consider the construction of 20 roads in the Tamil area and was asked to cross over to UPFA to accomplish the mission. Mr Puviraj has declined the offer, he said. A similar offer was given to him also two years ago by the SL military intelligence, he said.

A civic member of the TNA has already crossed over to the UPFA at Aalaiyadi-vempu in Ampaa’rai district in the East.

SL military intelligence operatives have approached a civic member in North, giving the option of crossing over to UPFA if he wanted his son, an ex-LTTE member in SL military custody, to be released, informed sources in Jaffna said.

In the meantime, Major General K. Jagath Alwis, known as “white van expert” has been appointed as the commander of the occupying SL military of genocidal Sri Lanka.
