A key base of now vanquished Tamil Tigers at Poonaryn in northern Sri Lanka has been converted into a police station.
Poonaryn in Wanni, which was liberated from the LTTE in November, 2008, was the strategic location for the rebels for controlling the southern shore of the Jaffna lagoon.

The reported remarks of a Sri Lankan Cabinet Minister that Pakistan, gripped by a wave of terror strikes, is "in a total mess" since the mid-seventies has led to objections from Islamabad, which said the comments were "unfair".

Even after routing the LTTE, the Sri Lanka army is all set to recruit up to 50,000 personnel to consolidate its position in the Wanni region once the stronghold the Tamil tigers.

The possibility of the Tamil Tigers regrouping again has been "thwarted completely" with the arrest of their new leader Kumaran Pathmanathan, Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said in remarks published on Sunday.
According to Rajapaksa, Pathmanathan, better known as KP, was arrested in an Asian country and flown to Colombo on the night of August 06.

A top LTTE intelligence operator was nabbed by the authorities on Tuesday from the national capital along with high explosives, months after the group was annihilated by Sri Lankan Army.

Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Wednesday said that the early resettlement of some 300,000 Tamils displaced in Sri Lanka will get "top billing" in talks with Colombo.

A top United Nations official has said that there is a steady improvement in camp conditions for internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka as the government is taking steps for resettlement of refugees.

Tamil Nadu Government incurred an expenditure of Rs 44.34 crores in 2008-09 for providing various relief measures to Sri Lankan Tamils living in refugee camps against Rs 39.90 crore spent in the previous year.
