US confirms resolution on Lanka

77031844_medium The State Department said today the US was ‘deeply concerned about allegations of violations with regard to humanitarian law and human rights’ and reiterated it would introduce a resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Answering a question posed by a journalist at the daily news briefing, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland also said the US welcomed the report by UN Human Rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay

“We continue to be deeply concerned by allegations of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Sri Lanka. We support a full accounting for all who are engaged in acts of violation of international humanitarian law. We also welcome the report by UN Human Rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay. We also note the strong concern about the Sri Lankan Government’s lack of action to address these long standing issues of reconciliation and accountability. And as you know, we plan to introduce our own resolution on this at the Human Rights Council,” Ms. Nuland said.
