36 deported asylum seekers arrive

A group of 36 Sri Lankan asylum seekers deported from the UK arrived in Sri Lanka this morning on a chartered flight.

The chartered flight with the failed asylum seekers, mostly Tamil (22) Sinhaese (8) and six Muslims left London Thursday despite the concerns raised by human rights organizations of the refugees’ safety. Each deportee was accompanied on the plane by two British police officers.

However, UK based Channel 4 last night reported that scores of Sri Lankans, due to have been deported from the UK on a government charter flight on Thursday afternoon, have had their removal orders overturned by high court judges. About 40 failed asylum-seekers – most of whom are thought to be Tamils – were granted dramatic last-minute stays.(Deepa Adhikari)
